I am having this problem with my personal blog Lessnau.com.  The site has been slow to load pages for the last two weeks and I have been going back and forth with my dedicated server hosting service on what the problem could be.  During this process I found a great website loading analysis tool that points out where the bottlenecks in your site could be.  While this has not yet solved my problem, it gives me another tool to help understand the problem.

NOW if someone could just figure it out the site’s problem before I move it from the dedicated server its on to a $3.99 a month Godaddy shared plan…

Here are some samples of link bait you could use:

• A blog post with a preposterous headline.
• A fake story about something people in your industry would freak out over if true.
• An important news scoop related to your website’s industry.
• Free website templates with your site’s link on the bottom of the template.
• Free WordPress blog templates with your site’s link on the bottom of the template
• Free link exchange software with your site’s link on the bottom.
• Free website widgets people that visit your site might want to install on their website.
• An innovative web based tool on your site that your visitors would love to use and tell others about.
• Best website awards (that link back to your site)
• A super cool flash game.
• An outrageous video
• Free content with your website address at the bottom of each page.

I am sure there are hundreds of other types of link bait out there.  You just need to get creative and come up with something that makes people that visit your site link to you for free.  Actually the links might be free but the time and money used to create the link bait definitely has its own cost.  Are there really any free links anymore?

Before you decide on a few high PR links or more low PR links, ask yourself the following questions:

• Is your site new?
• Is your site older but not indexed very well?
• How many one way links do you have now?
• What is the range of PR of the pages linking to you?
• Do you have lots of natural links?
• Are you ranking well for your money keywords or not at all?
• Is your site of value and worth linking too?
• Is your site making any money?
• Do you understand that PR is not the most important metric?
• Does your site have a lot to lose, or nothing to lose if your link strategy does not work out?
• What is your budget?

Only when you answer the above questions, can you decide on your link buying strategy. As you can see, it is not an easy yes or no question. The best way I can answer is that linking patterns must look natural. If you have a two page MFA site, it is not natural to pick up 3 or 4 high pr links out of the blue.

The Google toolbar is a critical piece of spyware that Google uses to watch the people who they consider competition (text link advertising). “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”. The toolbar helps keep their enemies very close. Because I don’t want them to know my personal business, I uninstalled the Google toolbar long ago.

If you don’t want Google to have a window into your SEO business, get rid of the their toolbar and check PR with the metrics checker.
