One reason people buy links is because it is quick and simple if you have the money. However, there are lots of ways to get links without "Buying Links". Here are some ways I have gotten text links in the past without actually buying links:

1. Do three way link exchanges with other webmasters. The LinkAdage Link Exchange Forum would be perfect for posting three way link exchange requests
   
2. Create a useful Wordpress plugin and give it away.
3. The barter system. Do a favor for someone with a website, ask for a link in return.
4. Write targeted articles for websites in exchange for one link in the article pointing to your site. (they get free content, you get a link)
5. Create awesome content on your website that people want to talk about and link to.
6. Attend conferences and make friends with other webmasters – ask them for a link from one of their second tier websites.
7. Find free link directories in your niche
